Abstract:

Background: In Iran, nearly 530,000 intentional abortions take place every year. Intentional or criminal abortions make up nearly a third of all abortions, which is a significant number. In order to improve the mortality rate of pregnant mothers and reduce unsafe abortions, it is necessary to identify key causes of abortion. This study was conducted to investigate the Factors affecting induced abortions, allowing for the development of effective solutions for policy-making based on the results.  Methods: The present study was carried out using the scoping review method in 2023. This scoping review assessed articles related to the causes of induced abortion from 2003 to 2023 searched in English language databases, including Springer, PubMed, Web of Science, Emerald, ScienceDirect, and Scopus, as well as Persian electronic databases, including Magiran and SID, and the Google Scholar search engine. The data were analyzed qualitatively through content analysis and coded using MAXQDA software, version 20.  Results: In this study, Factors affecting induced abortion were categorized as predisposing Factors, enabling Factors, and need Factors associated with the use or non-use of health services. Conclusion: The effective Factors in fertility are the society’s culture, as well as environmental, social, economic, political, and religious Factors that determine fertility and abortion within the society. At the micro level, personal motives, people’s attitudes, and their perceptions can affect people’s behavior.

Abstract:

induced abortion is one of the problems to which some women resort for different reasons including family planning, to hide their illegal relations, avoid unwanted pregnancy, rape, etc. Physical and psychological aftermaths of abortion on women who experience it as well as cultural and social conditions of abortion show the importance of paying attention to the problem. This research aims to study the social Factors affecting pregnant women’s attitude to induced abortion. The research was performed through survey method and statistical population was all women at the fertility age in Tehran in the year 2006. Sample size was calculated according to formula: 300 people and quota sampling was used. The results of multivariate regression analysis show that variables like religiosity, the attitude of the family and relatives towards abortion, and the social class involve 26 percent of variance related to the attitude of the women towards abortion. Fading faith and piety among women, according to the results, has a direct relationship with increased positive attitude towards abortion. Other variables such as age, education, and occupational status are not related to do women’s attitude towards having abortions.

Abstract:

BACKGROUND: There is limited reliable information on abortion in Iran, where abortion is illegal and many women of reproductive age seek clandestine abortion to end their unintended pregnancy. This study aims to examine the determinants of induced abortion in the city of Hamedan, Iran. METHODS: The study utilizes recent data from the 2015 Hamedan Survey of Fertility, conducted in a representative sample of 3, 000 married women aged 15-49 years in the city of Hamedan, Iran. Binary logistic regression models are used to examine Factors associated with the incidence of abortion. RESULTS: Overall, 3. 8% of respondents reported having had an induced abortion in their life. Multivariate results showed that the incidence of abortion was strongly associated with women’ s education, type of contraceptive and family income level, after controlling for confounding Factors. Women using long-acting contraceptive methods, those educated under high school diploma or postsecondary education, and those with high level of income were more likely to report having an induced abortion. CONCLUSION: The high incidence of abortion among less or more educated women and those with high income level signifies unmet family planning needs among these women, which must be addressed by focused reproductive health and family planning programs.

Abstract:

Background & aim: abortion is the third leading cause of maternal mortality. The attitude of women towards abortion is one of the most important Factors involved in this procedure. This study aimed to evaluate the attitude of women of reproductive age towards induced abortion. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 450 women of reproductive age in Fatemieh Hospital in Hamedan, Iran in 2014. Data was collected using abortion attitude scale consisting of five sections: socioeconomic status, family status, maternal and fetal health status, psychocultural background, and fertility status. Mean score less than three in each domain was considered negative attitude, while scores higher or equal to three indicated positive attitude towards induced abortion. To analyze the data, logistic regression analysis, Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were performed using SPSS version 21. P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: In this study, induced abortion had no significant relationship with family status, maternal and fetal health, and fertility domains (82.1%, 77.3%, and 64.4%, respectively). On the other hand, a relationship was observed between induced abortion and socioeconomic and psychocultural domains of the majority of the participants (61.8% and 56%, respectively). According to the results of logistic regression analysis, the predictors of induced abortion were the attitude towards the effect of abortion on the health of mother and fetus (P=0.01), as well as the psychocultural status of the mothers regarding this procedure (P=0.02).Conclusion: Evaluation of the results indicated a strong belief in the majority of the participants in psychocultural and socioeconomic domains as the most significant predictive Factors for induced abortion. Since it is difficult to alter the socioeconomic and psychocultural domains of individuals, changes are recommended in predominant attitudes towards induced abortion.

Abstract:

Background: abortion is a public health concern because of its impact on maternal morbidity and mortality. Each year, about 79 million unintended pregnancies, excluding miscarriage, occur worldwide. More than half of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. The purpose of this study was to determine the ever-event incidence of abortion (spontaneous and induced) and some related Factors in a population-based sample of reproductive age women. Methods: From July 2003 through January 2004, 2470 women were included in the study through multistage random sampling and were interviewed. Data were collected using a checklist with questions about demographics and specific items regarding abortion history. Information about age, literacy, gravidity, marriage age, abortion, type of abortion, family history of abortion, history of family marriage, smoking, drug use, alcohol use, coffee intake, and incidence of abortion during the previous year were recorded. Statistical analysis included Student’s t-test, Chi-square, ANOVA, and logistic regression using SPSS software. Results: Out of the 2,470 women in the study, 775 (45.7%), had at least one abortion in their lives. Of the women who had an abortion, 20.6% reported induced abortion and 74.2% reported spontaneous abortion. Forty-one point four percent of women aged 45 years and older had at least one abortion in their lifetime. Fifty-one (2.1%) women had a history of abortion during the previous year; the largest proportion was 5.4% for the age group 15 – 24 years. The most common method of induced abortion in the previous year was dilatation and curettage (42 to 67%). In multivariate analysis, household number, coffee consumption, gravidity, smoking, and history of abortion in the family were the most important Factors related to abortion in the different age groups of women. Conclusion: This study shows that the occurrence of at least one abortion in the life of women in our setting is high and varies by age group. There is a need for expanded comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, and more education and accessibility of contraception methods.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Today, abortion occurs in successful marriages in addition to shaky married lives. According to research, many psychological Factors affect the occurrence of this phenomenon. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the psychological Factors leading to women's desire for abortion in successful marriages. Methods: The study was descriptive-survey with a cross-sectional method. The statistical population of pregnant women prone to induced abortion referring to the hospitals of the 1st and 3rd regions of Tehran in 2023 was 3600 people, of which 351 people were selected using the available sampling method based on Morgan's table. The instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire, whose validity was obtained by experts' opinion and confirmatory factor analysis, and its reliability was obtained by Cronbach's alpha method. Data analysis was done using Pearson's correlation coefficient test and regression in SPSS-26. Ethical Considerations: In all stages of the research, the principles of ethics in research, according to the Declaration of Helsinki (2008) were observed by the researchers. Results: The findings showed that, based on the correlation test, there was a significant correlation between psychological Factors including stress and anxiety, worry about the health of oneself and the fetus, early fatigue and headache, lack of preparation and unwanted pregnancy with the desire for abortion, but between mood instability and lack of compliance with There is no significant correlation between physical changes and the desire for abortion (P<0.05). The results of the regression showed that there is a significant and acceptable multiple correlation between all psychological Factors and the desire for abortion (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to the findings of the research, it is necessary to control some of the effective psychological Factors during pregnancy, which provides the basis for reducing women's desire for abortion.
